My apartment has a beautiful view that overlooks the harbor and downtown San Diego skyline. I find a lot of inspiration setting up my gear and sitting in front of these windows.

I wanted to create a project that felt light and sunny, embodying what summer time feels like to me while also challenging myself to try to complete it all in a month. I feel like a lot of my other stuff sounds "dark" in a sense, so I wanted to make something the opposite of that.

Most of the sounds on this tape stem from Japan's late 70's/ 80s city pop era, as well as some city pop from different eras and other countries throughout Asia. "Chamber (Reflections)" was the first beat I made for this tape and it kind of became the anchor for the sound I was going for.

Normally, I take entirely too long to finish a beat so I tried out a new creative process for this project. I set an intention to not overthink anything and to break up the different parts of making a beat into smaller steps. First I would dig for samples in batches. Once I had a bunch of stuff I might want to use, I started creating the beats. I would create a pattern and just move on to the next beat. Then dig for more samples, create more patterns and so on until I had a bunch of ideas sketched out. Then, I went back, added layers, created sequences, put everything together, mixed, etc.

I also usually have my artwork completed before I finish my tape to kind of help guide me in the direction I want to go, but for this project, the music was finished first before I had any idea of what the album art would be.
